Utada, Your 2009’s Already Lookin’ Good

Random discovery.

I had no idea that this was even sort of happening.
Okay, so I was aware that she was going to release another English album. All I can do is hope that it’s well promoted and I can actually find it in record stores over here.

I have played Come Back To Me approximately nine times in a row and it’s not getting old yet. I have no idea what it is, but I really love this track.

This will stay a short post because honestly I just can’t form the words, I’m still trying to write that Perfume post and I’ve got one on the go about SNSD’s new MV and mini-album so I’ll probably write more when there’s more released songs or news or whatever.

Ikimonogakari ~I have no witty post names left~

Not that I had any to begin with.

The first time I heard Ikimonogakari is when I was first getting into J-pop and all I knew how to get my hands on was anime songs.

Hanabi caught my ear immediately and I played it and played it and played it. Since then I’ve grown a little tired of the song. But what it did was aquaint me with the name and style sufficiently enough so that when I found my resources I thought “Eh, I know that name”!

I downloaded the Life Album when it came out and only successfully listened to two songs on it. One being Hana wa Sakura Kimi wa Utsukushi, which could be my favourite Ikimonogakari song, and the other I can’t even remember. In the end I deleted the album

I don’t know what happened there. I’m sure it was a fantastic album, but I think at that point I was wrapped up in so many different artists and albums and singles that I just forgot that I even really liked Ikimonogakari.

It changed when Kimagure Romantic (the video at the top) came out not that long ago. So much fun packed into so little time, great lyrics and an absolutely brilliant video- verging on the best of 2008.

Their newest album is called My Song Your Song and there are fourteen reasons why you should listen to it – the songs. They’re all quite long tracks – Blue Bird is the shortest at 3:38 and Kaeri Taku Natta yo is the longest at 6:07 – and initially that turned me off listening to them. I’m very well known for listening to the first couple of minutes and then switching onto a different, shorter and more upbeat song.

But all it took was one epiphany in the form of listening to the end of Pugi Ugi (probably my favourite off the album), half falling asleep because I’d been up all night and I couldn’t be bothered to change the song so I ended up listening to Maboroshi.

The opening is pretty and wintery and then it slows down for Kiyoe to start singing the opening verses. All okay really, but it only particularly picks up steam during the pre-chorus. I love the melody and Kiyoe has a wonderful voice, which I’m surprised I didn’t mention before (more on this later). Anyway, falling in love with Maboroshi prompted me to listen to some more tracks. So I picked a title that sounded interesting.

That was Happy Smile Again, which is a great song, although there’s not a huge amount to mention about it. What cemented my particular love for My Song Your Song was the song after it. Kuchizuke is so dramatic. It’s actually quite dark and I absolutely adored it from the moment it started.

Right, Kiyoe’s voice. One word; Gorgeous. She has such a rich tone which really strengthens the ballads (see Kokoro no Hana wo Sakaseyou for evidence) but it’s also really versatile. She can sound sad or ridiculously happy, light and energetic or dramatic in Kuchizuke. She’s one of the few vocalist who I can’t pick much of a fault with. That’s one of the things that caught me in Hanabi – that high note right at the beginning was flawless and from then on she sounded really strong and forceful, without trying too hard. I am so bad at explaining things. Suffice to say that I really admire Kiyoe’s vocals.

Ikimonogakari do have a certain style and it’s one I’ve never been interested in before, but My Song Your Song was that epiphany moment and that was all that was needed. Ultimately I’ve gone on a ramble in this post and in the end I haven’t said everything I wanted to say about my favourite songs, Pugi Ugi and Kimagure Romantic particularly, but currently I’m mulling over a Perfume post and my 2008 roundup. But I’ll probably get back to it.

Happy 2009 though.

2008 H!P Review

Okay, so it’s a bit of a bandwagon jump but it helps me get half of my 2008 general review out of the way and means that my own catagories won’t be monopolised by H!P.

Anyway, Amy of Merry Go Round put up a little poll and I gave myself some time to think about it and here are my responses.

BEST

Best Group Single
I thought for most of this year that I wasn’t really getting much from my new found fandom, but now that I look back single-wise, this is really hard. It’s a toss up between C\C (Cinderella\Complex), MADAYADE, Pepper Keibu, Edo no Temari Uta II and Renai Rider. I think my vote eventually goes to Edo no Temari Uta II because it’s the song that really made me pay attention to C-ute and C\C (Cinderella\Complex) because that was the smartest special group ever… and I love Yuukarin.
(and if it counts it actually draws with THE Possible’s Ijiwaru Crazy Love because that reminded me of my good old J-pop beginnings.)

Best Soloist Single -
I love Nacchi, but Screen didn’t excite me at all and I haven’t even listened to Aya or Miki’s recent releases. The only soloist I really pay attention to is Koharu (because I’m suicidal… or possibly on drugs) but I don’t vote for Papancake because it took forever for me to actually like it… I abstain from this category as I have no answer.

Best Group Album -
5(FIVE) or COVER YOU. 5(FIVE) made me like Berryz a LOT again, and COVER YOU surpassed all of my expectations… and Johnnie e no Dengon cemented my love for Risa.

Best Solo Album -
Well, there was only one. And that gets my vote because I do love Koharu’s Kirarin stuff for the most part. Plus it had Anataboshi and Tan Tan Taan! on it. Kirari to Fuyu

Best PV -
I wonder how many, if any, will vote for Resonant Blue. Yuke Yuke Monkey Dance… monkey suits, what more could you want?

Best New Group -
MilkyWay hands down. Both of their releases are golden, a-side and b-side, and I can’t help but love them. Kikka’s voice owns, how did she not get into Morning Musume? Oh and F.Y.I - if MilkyWay didn’t exist, Shugo Chara Egg would have won this category.

Best Established Group -
C-ute because I genuinely love them now. Morning Musume need a new original album before I come to a judgement on whether they’re better than their juniors. Berryz Koubou need to… I don’t know  – be better than C-ute?

Best Established Soloist -
This is probably an answer no-one wants to hear. Kusumi Koharu. I like her albums and single and I don’t really pay much attention to the others. Honestly I only really like Ayaya’s earlier songs.

Best Photobook -
Because Amy will cry if I don’t and I don’t really buy/download PBs, I choose 6gatsu no Kajitsu. :D

Hottest Idol of 2008 -
… I don’t know…
Umeda Erika’s getting more attractive, Airi is Airi – as always. Gaki is…
Niigaki Risa.

WORST

Worst Group Single -
Kiss!Kiss!Kiss! because in the end it just wound up boring me. I listen to it rarely and I just don’t really care. Buono! still rock though, and Gachinko and Rottara totally made up for it.

Worst Soloist Single -
Anything by ManoEri!!! Out of the three (though I haven’t heard the third one yet) I vote for Mano Piano - it was a great song… until she started singing! I can’t believe I still have it on my computer!

Worst PV -
FOREVER LOVE. The dance was brilliant, the suits ruled, the set was quite groovy but all it was was bit of dance/random shot of C-ute/bit more dance/another shot of C-ute. It bored me. I still haven’t watched it all the way through.

Worst Vocalist -
Kusumi Koharu. She’s my favourite but even I can admit that she gets a bit much. I absolutely abhored Papancake when it came out because of her voice, I don’t kow quite what happened to make me like it… This is all relative anyway. She’s the worst out of the people I can think of and listen to (therefore excluding ManoEri) but that doesn’t mean she’s the worst and I still love her new album. Did I just backpedal completely or what?
Or that egg from Shugo Chara Egg!!! Her voice is kinda sucky. I don’t know her name. It’s the one in yellow (I think)

Least Attractive Idol of 2008 -
LinLin. I love the girl, she has a kick ass voice and a sunny personality but she’s still a little funny lookin’.

Well that’s my two cents, and I hope my explaination was satisfactory even though I’m still confused about the Worst Vocalist category. Here you go Amy, add this to your results.

Welcomed Back With Some Momusu

Since I haven’t blogged anything in absolutely ages I did review of Morning Musume’s new album COVER YOU on KtoE. And what that did was prompt me to rethink my rankings of the Morning Musume members. When I did this before I didn’t post my opinions properly – I was afraid of offending any particular girl’s fans and it just read flat. So here’s mark two.

NUMBER ONE.
Kusumi Koharu.
Yep. Well she’s been my favourite for quite a while… and I don’t really know why. Based on talent she’s not really a prodigy, honestly her voice and singing style have been getting worse, but the thing is; You can’t blame her. She’s being forced into this cutesy Kirarin mould most of the time and what it’s done is stuck as a habit. But nevermind all that. She’s my favourite because I like her personality and her solo work, not to mention how much I adore the MilkyWay unit.

JOINT FIRST
Niigaki Risa.
She’s actually shot up my ratings. At first she illicited a “I don’t care much about [insert name here]” type response, then she recieved a boost of popularity (with me) by being awesome in Seishun! Love Lunch but even then she was only in the middle of my rank. What did it was pretty recent. She was amazing in Daizenshuu and then Pepper Keibu came out and then I watched the Summer Wonderful Hearts gig and then COVER YOU happened. And Risa sang a little song called Johnnie e no Dengon. I love her voice so much in that. And I love her as the Prince in Cinderella.

NUMBER TWO
LinLin.
It’s her voice. I totally love it and was so surprised and overjoyed when she and JunJun got to sing most of Shiroi Chou no Samba. Not to mention that Ayaya song she led with Airi and that egg – Ogawa Saki- Hajimete Kuchibiru wo Kasaneta Yoru in Wonderful Hearts. Personality wise I don’t see much more than her being all :D through most songs, but she is serious when she wants to be.

NUMBER THREE
Kamei Eri.
Through Single Daizenshuu I just started liking her more and more. Before that I cared like nothing for her. Also very entertaining in Cinderella I love the bit where she talking at Prince Gaki about being named after a character in ‘The Merchant of Venice’.

NUMBER FOUR
JunJun.
Ah, COVER YOU strikes. Shiroi Chou no Samba was a wake up call where it came to JunJun. I realised that her voice is much nicer than I had previously thought. Maybe because in most of the lines we’ve heard from her before she’s been overpowered by other voices. Anyway, she’s also travelling up my list.

NUMBER FIVE
Takahashi Ai.
I like her but I still want her to graduate. She’s annoying me a bit now, I vastly prefer watching her in Cinderella and Ribbon no Kishi to seeing her in concerts because, while I realise that she is a big-hitter in the H!P world and the leader of Morning Musume, I take exception to someone monopolising live performances. It’s not her fault and I’m not trying to insult her, but it’s been a little too much Ai not enough Morning Musume. It’s not hard to give other people a few lines once in a while.

NUMBER SIX
Tanaka Reina.
I do not have the problem with Reina that others have, I just don’t really have enough evidence to form a case against her in the er… jury of my head shall we say. She is rather rocking in Cinderella\Complex and I also like her in the actual stage play, but I’ve not got much else to go on.

NUMBER SEVEN
Mitsui Aika.
Right. I barely ever acknowledge her in songs because I can’t tell where the hell she is in them. Her smile freaks me out. I don’t think she’s “cute”. I can’t tell if she’s a very good dancer, because any stage-presence she has underwhelms me. I only speak my own variety of truth.

NUMBER EIGHT/A.K.A LAST PLACE
Michishige Sayumi.
I see nothing in her. I don’t like her voice, you can call that hypocritical when Koharu’s my favourite but it’s my ranking, her being all “cute” annoys me. She’s completely blah in my opinion.

So… You got all that?
Please don’t comment complaining about someone being opinionated.

Elva Hsiao’s 3 Faced

Ages ago I did a “Propaganda” post on her, just after she piqued my interest. I finally got around to purchasing her 3Faced album, the pre-order edition which was packaged with three of her early album (helloooo debut!) and I just recieved it today, along with Shokotan’s last two singles.

There a few more ballads in the collection than I would really like there to be, but that’s pretty okay because her up-beat songs more than make-up for it and the ballads themselves are pretty good songs anyway.

The packaging is pretty amazing. It’s very, very elegant. There are a couple of different versions of the album cover and this one is the Wholehearted Version, specifically. One thing I really have to rejoice at is that the tracklist on 3Faced has alternate ENGLISH titles! Which means I don’t have to constantly refer to the tracks in number form, like ”Hey, do you like Track 7? I like Track 12!” It gets irritating quick.

My Chinese is non-existant but I honestly do really enjoy this album even without the comprehension her native fans have. With Japanese releases I usually have some idea what’s being said (usually) but I like being thrown into the deep end and having no clue. Relying on the sound of the songs and the emotion in the vocals gives you an abstract understanding of each song. It’s hard to explain – basically you don’t have to disect the lyrics or even identify them as along any sort of theme to reach a conclusion on what they mean to you, yourself. It’s a good assessment of how effective the song is.

But I digress.
Highlights on the album are as follows I’ll Be There, Impulse, More More More and Hey Girl.
Count me as an Elva fan… now I really need to get my hands on her 1087 album.

Mada-mada-madayade!

Oh yes, it’s time for the required Berryz New Release post.

MADAYADE will be out soon but the PV was released a couple of days ago. I will admit that at first I was incredibly nonchalant about the song, but just like Yuke Yuke Monkey Dance it got too catchy to be ignored. It seems to be a common pattern with Berryz Koubou releases that I don’t like them particularly at first and then suddenly yowza I love it.

The more I think about it and the more I watch the video, the more I think that Miyabi is absolutely perfect in a pink Berryz Kamen-type costume. The others look great too but Miyabi sticks out as looking quite amazering. They all look great as OLs too, but I am rather reminded of the ugly summer dresses that I had to wear in primary school. And Chinami looks… gangly.

The dance is pretty simplistic but is executed really nicely, but one thing that strikes me is how rosy the shots look. The screen is absolutely saturated in pink and it feels really warm and cosy. Anyway, the actual choreography is pretty catchy too, the wota will love it at least, and the fact that don’t do the moves all together all the time.

So that was completely pointless, but what the heck. I love this song.

A Proper Write-Up On 2008 Wonderful Hearts Summer Concert

Click here for full tracklist because I can’t be bothered to take up the space here and I won’t necessarily mention all of the tracks.

First of all, this is just going to be a highlights post, because every other time I’ve done track-by-track concert reviews I have failed miserably. Another note, I think that all of the songs, or at least most of them, have had a great deal of time chopped straight out of the middle as well.

For the general opening, bits of it were a little lol-worthy. Especially the eggs doing their under the sea, swimming routine. But of course Summer = Hawaii is the general consensus.

Natsu LOVE Romance and Manatsu no Kousen are rather obviously lipsynched and I’m not quite sure if that’s okay with me yet, but I can feel the energy from both songs, and I have been converted to Manatsu no Kousen. I never liked it before. Of course Ai, Reina and Gaki really stick out here, but that’s because they’re the only focused on members.

Yes, Inaba Atsuko looks like she is hosting the Oscars. It’s really nice to see her here, she’s smiling and enthusiastic and I really like her now, even though we don’t have a Yaguchi Mari in the proceedings.

C-ute are the first group to perform without the back up crew. Two songs, Edo no Temari Uta II and Namida no Iro. I’m still questioning why most of the members have flying saucers on their heads, but I digress. I’m suddenly reminded why I like this song so much. It’s an energectic and fairly flawless performance but when the strains of Namida no Iro began I started to think… ‘In those outfits!?!’ But despite the wardrobe being in rather stark contrast to the song Airi and Maimi still embody the feeling of it really well. I love Airi’s lines. Plus, the dance is golden.

Following C-ute’s very well performed set, we have Papancake by Koharu. And I no longer do not like this song. In fact I have listened to it several times today. Her vocal is good, even though it is pre-recorded, but her hyper-genki-ness is a joy to watch and she generally just performs the song. And then Anataboshi one of my favourite ever H!P songs. Lip-synched, but wouldn’t you want to be with all that hopping around? Trust me, you lose energy really quickly when you’re doing this dance.

Kikka and Saaya really impressed me here, they look so at home on the stage. I understand that they are eggs and have been performing in concert for a while but the confidence exuding from them is almost Morning Musume in quality. Needless to say, they keep up with Koharu very well.

I am also reminded why I like Yuke Yuke Monkey Dance so much as well. And if you needed any reminder of Maasa and Chinami’s awesomeness it’s right here. I love the audience participation in the verses! I so wish I was there to join in. Everyone’s sounding good, yes even Risako. Though I am slightly biased towards her, because she’s my favourite Berryz Koubou member. Especially that Wow! near the end, that rocks like heck because I don’t think I’ve heard Risako do that before.

After so long being rather ambivalent towards it I’m starting to actually fall in love with Resonant Blue. Despite there being the leads on this song there’s still decent enough coverage of all the other members. Thanks to this and a couple of tracks later on (which I will spazz about in due time) I’m really starting to like Reina a lot more and Ai is creeping back up my list, though she still irritates me ever so slightly. You know, I’m surprised I haven’t mentioned the outfits yet. They’re okay, but LinLin should have been given some sleeves, she looks like a badly drawn chibi at times. And while Lin’s looking like a small child, JunJun is hitting the performance on the head. She is seriously fierce in some of those shots… I mean really fierce. Risa just rules her parts as does Eri.

LinLin and Airi and an egg, who I’ve discovered is called Ogawa Saki, sing a nice little ballad. It’s nice to see LinLin with a good chance to shine because, personally, I think she has a great voice that more could be done with… and putting her with Airi hopefully means that other people think so too. And she’s not leading on just any song, oh no, it’s an Ayaya song :D Hajimete Kuchibiru wo Kasaneta Yoru. Vocally it’s very strong and Ogawa Saki is cute and she can hold her own.

Sayu and Risako’s version of Chu! Natsu Party is cute and fun. Ridiculous costumes and I still don’t particularly like Sayu, but eh… it’s worth a watch at least.

OKAY!!! Now it’s my time to spazz (this may be a very long paragraph)! High-King and Cinderella\Complex and Kioku no Meiro. It took me most of yesterday to find the right word to explain my feelings for this section of the concert. It’s my favourite part and I’m dissapointed that we’ll likely never hear anything more from High-King. The word that I finally came up with was ‘electrifying’. There’s so much energy and effort put in here that the atmosphere is tangible through my laptop screen. And despite the fact that I can’t understand most of what they’re singing I can somehow feel it, especially in Cinderella\Complex there’s something about the way Ai says her lines, and the expressions that make me think “Wow, I know what you mean” (even though I blatantly don’t). They’re all fabulous dancers too. Kioku no Meiro seems to fill the entire area with sound and is just generally amazing so I’m incredibly glad that it was performed. And can I just start a fanclub for Maeda Yuuka. I was sitting through most of KnM waiting to see if she’d get her solo chorus and YES SHE DID. I love her, she’s so cute, yet amazingly talented too. Plus she looks like a complete professional, even against all those H!P big shots. You have no idea how much I wish I cosplayed right now. (spazz over, you can come out from behind the sofa.)

This is the only MC I wil really talk about, apart from Inaba-san’s near the end. They bring back the tennis thing and the H-K girls answer questions while pretending to ‘rally’ with Makoto. And Reina is fail. Plus you realise how much she loves to talk. Yes, I really am beginning to like Reina. Yuukarin pwns with her cuteness and Saki looks like Gaki for a split second or four. There’s a little talk of Cinderella The Musical and Reina gives us a character preview that I did lol at.

I love Tokonatsu Musume so much I almost died when I heard it start to play and out came Risa, Eri and Aika. You know what, oddly enough I was disappointed when I discovered that I couldn’t see the shaka-hand movement thing properly, but that might be just because for the past two weeks I’ve been wandering around singing the song and that just stuck with me. Much like the fact that I’ve listened to and watched so much idol music I naturally respond to most questions with a peace sign. I love the dance break with the hula moves… but these girls generally are a lot more natural with dance than most of Coconuts Musume were.

JunJun gets her chance to shine next but I don’t care much for the song so… moving on. But well done JunJun.

Ah, wait. I don’t like Kousui much either. Moving on furthur.

The Buono! set is typical Buono! awesomeness and I’m not gonna talk about it too much because, honestly, you probably already know what to expect from a Buono! performance anyway. I will say that the girls are on top form all the way through Gachinko de Ikou! and Kiss!Kiss!Kiss! Oh, and that Airi’s Hai donmai is rather cute. No pun intended.

Berryz Koubou and C-ute team up again and relive the battle concert for a song or two. Massara Blue Jeans is a song I suddenly love and Special Generation isn’t quite there yet, but eh whatever. Those high notes are hit (Risako-voice-haters you may now eat your hats) and I still think that Mai is actually a twenty year old trapped in a younger body.

Now this is an MC that is really worth talking about. Inaba-san reads some messages from the members of Morning Musume + impressions. And it is amazing so I’m going to have to talk about all of them. Her Reina is absolutely hilarious, she’s got the attitude, even throwing in a wink and a CHANCE! XD She has a little bit of a problem remembering what to say for Aika, which is lol too. Usa-chan peace for Sayu. Her JunJun was rather accurate too from what I can gather. The Koharu-voice killed me dead the first time, absolutely and the look on Inaba-san’s face is totally “I can’t believe I just did that!”

I don’t like it when they end concerts with ballads but I’ll forgive them Ame no Furanai. Yes, I refuse to type the full title, because I can’t remember it. The most pointful thing to say about this performance is that only JunJun and LinLin get solo lines, their Chinese lines and the rest is sung by everyone. JunJun does really well but the focus is on LinLin and that last note. I love that moment from the first time I heard it and I love the fact that Jun’s singing along. As a side note Noto Arisa’s jumping really makes me worry for that microphone.

And as they walk off the stage to the strains of Ai Araba IT’S ALL RIGHT I find myself thinking that that is the most satisfying Hello!Project concert I’ve ever seen. Minus the battle concert. Two songs I didn’t enjoy, MilkyWay, High-King and most of all Inaba-san’s impressions mean that this is an amazing watch.

This is long and has no pictures.
Sorry

Shokotan Again

I’m now imitating my Koharu post kick, but this time with Shokotan. With Hairspray on in the background this time.

Anyway, I’ve kind of gone on an insane extravaganzathon of Shoko’s songs and have learned half of them. And now I really wish, like a hell of a lot, that I could meet her and sing them with her.

Eh… never gonna happen, but a girl can dream right?

Ah, the point of this post.

Is completely random. But I was thinking of setting up a fansite/blog here on wordpress, but I don’t want to do it alone and it ending up falling through after about three weeks of little to no activity, so if anyone actually reads this and is a fan of Shokotan’s contact me and let’s organise something :D

Shokotan is Number Something-or-Other

Nakagawa Shoko has been the subject of a surprising number of conversations I have had with my best friend. For some reason, and I know not what, she has become somewhat of a escalating favourite. There’s no way she would overtake my absolute favourites like Ayu or Kumi or Hikki anytime soon, if at all, but I find myself increasingly more satisfied with her releases.

I’d heard about her in passing and then downloaded and enjoyed her debut album, even if anime music is not my thing, and since then whenever I see a new single or video up for download I feel an inexplicable draw to seize the link. And is it just me or is she releasing a lot?

Cause it feels like it.

The Shiny GATE single was less than spectacular admittedly, but it was good for the genre, it just didn’t sit well with me. But Tsuzuku Sekai was awe-inspiring.

Shokotan has several voices. Her cutesy pop voice, her rock voice, her anime theme song voice, her ballad voice… it’s a long list and I think that’s what I really like about her. From release to release she sounds different, new, fresh and diverse.

Her newest song Kirei a la Mode I haven’t listened to completely yet, I’m distracted watching The Last Legion, but from what I’ve heard I definitely like. She sounds half-ballad, half-pop song and she has an odd ability to make everything sound rather like a theme song. In a good way.

Anyway, if I had to evaluate where she is on my favourite soloist list, she would be in my top ten, maybe even top five.
