DDD – Fiesta – XXX

The only group of their genre that I’ll actually listen to properly.
By properly I mean ‘Pretty much all of their songs’. Which is true. Usually I find the constant “R’n'B” beat pointlessness…well, pointless. It’s not “R’n'B” anyway, but I’m not going to go into that until I have a real reason.
SOULHEAD got my attention right at the beginning of my real J-Pop exploration during the latter part of last year. One of the first albums I downloaded was Koda Kumi‘s Best ~Second Session~ and one of the tracks on it features SOULHEAD. That track (DDD) was instantly my favourite and when I found out there was an alternate version (XXX) I leapt to download it.
Frankly, I like DDD a lot more, but both did enough to pique my interest. After I’d grabbed Angela Aki’s albums and MegaUpload was being nice again I threw this on my hard-drive. I latched onto a couple of tracks immediately but some fell victim to being a little too boring for me.
That was then. Recently I went back to Best Of SOULHEAD, threw it on m MP3 and waited a long time for a bus to arrive. Now I love all the songs on the album, even the ballads. And I usually hate “R’n'B” ballads, so…er… major victory for them.
SOULHEAD always manage to fulfil a quota of catchy lines per song. Lover, Knight, Man has the title as its addictive line, OH MY SISTER manages the entire chorus and Get Up!! has enough of a ‘Celebrate good times’ feel to be a song played at any party, Japanese music appreciators or no.
They need to hurry up and release more. In comparison to most of the artists I like they’re not as successful but, hell, do I enjoy their Braided album (Even though it came out yonks ago… 4 years even)
So… this proves that musical prejudices only kill any chance you have of discovering some awesome stuff
